Tribute Trials

My Score: 83%

I think i could have done much better by choosing wiser.

Chapter 10

1.      Why does Peeta reveal his love for Katniss? Do you think he really loves her? Why or why not?

I think he reveals his love for Katniss because he maybe wants more sponsors. No I don’t think he really likes her because why would he reveal a huge secret like that on live national T.V for everyone to know.
2.      What is Peeta’s main concern during the hunger games?

His main concern is that he wants do die as himself. He doesn’t want the games to change him. He also doesn’t want to be changed by the capitol or anything else there.
3.      How does the Capitol view the previous arenas of the hunger games? How many games have there been?

The hunger games arenas are just prehistoric themes. No arena is ever the same. They are very popular for reenactments and for people to come and take pictures and they are very popular.
4.      What do you feel is the purpose of the hunger games?

I think the purpose of the hunger games is to show that the capitol has an endless amount of power. Also to remind that if they rebel their district might have the same future like district 13.
Quotes
"'He made you look desirable! And let's face it; you can use all the help you can get in that department. You were about as romantic as dirt until he said he wanted you.'"  pg135
"You're all they're talking about. The star-crossed lovers from District Twelve! ‘says Haymitch. 'But we're not star-crossed lovers!' I say. " pg135
"'When the gong sounds, get the hell out of there. You're neither of you up to the blood bath at the Cornucopis. Just clear out, put as much distance s you can between yourselves and the others, and find a source of water,' he says." pg138-139
"And I'm not looking to escape, only to fill my lungs with air. I want to see the sky and the moon on the last night that no one will be hunting me."  pg140

Chapter 9

1.      Describe Katniss’ interview attire and training? What affect do you think it had on the audience?

Katniss was wearing a long kind of gown designed with fire and filled with jewels and her arms were painted with lines. The dress is really heavy. Also half flames on her 20 perfect nails. Training wasn’t well because it sounded like Haymitch and Effie didn’t really like her anymore. I think the audience liked her answers.
2.      How does Haymitch and Cinna ask Katniss to behave?

Haymitch and Cinna ask Katniss to to be herself because they couldn’t really find her a personality trait. Cinna also says to pretend you talking to a friend to make it more relaxing and so she won’t feel stressed.
3.      What do we discover about Peeta during his interview?

We discovered that peeta likes Katniss for a couple of years already. He says that she has many admirers.
Quotes
"'People are intrigued, but no one knows who you are. The impression you make tomorrow will decide exactly what I can get you in terms of sponsors,' says Haymitch." pg116
"A plump person is envied because they aren't scraping by like the majority of us. But here it is different. Wrinkles aren't desirable.  A round belly isn't a sign of success." pg125
"Petta sighs.’Well, there is this one girl. I've had a crush on her ever since I can remember. But I'm pretty sure she didn't know I was alive until the reaping.’.... Peeta blushes beet red and stammers out. 'Because... because... she came here with Me.” pg130
“Handsome lad like you. There must be some special girl. Come on, what's her name?' says Caesar. Peeta sighs. 'Well, there is this one girl. I've had a crush on her since I can remember. But I'm pretty sure she didn't know I was alive until the reaping." pg130

Chapter 8

1.     What do the scores in the trainings mean to the tributes? What scores do Peeta and Katniss receive?

The scores are how good the tribute is at their skill. For example Katniss is good at using the bow and arrow and she got an 11. Peeta was good at lifting heavy stuff and he got an 8. The higher the score the more sponsors want you, but if you get a low score they won’t really want you and you probably be saved to be killed for last.
2.     How did Katniss and Gale meet? Describe their story.

Katniss was only 12 when she met Gale in the woods. She couldn’t really hunt that well and she came across a lot of hanging dead bunnies. She thought that they weren’t anyone’s so she was about to get them when gale comes and scares her. He was only a couple of years older than her but he already looked like a man. She had remembered him because his dad also died in the mining explosion.

Quotes
“Now I've ruined everything! If I’d stood even a ghost of a chance, it vanished when I sent that arrow flying at the Gamekeepers. What will they do to me now? Arrest me? Execute me? Cut my tongue and turn me into an Avox so I can wait on the future tributes of Panem?"  pg 103
"Now I'm sure I'll have the lowest score of the twenty-four. If no one sponsors me, my odds of staying alive decrease to almost zero." pg 105
"I shot an arrow at them. Not exactly at them. In their direction. It's like Peeta said, I was shooting and they were ignoring me and i just... I just lost my head, so i shot an apple out of their stupid roast pig's mouth!" pg 106

"That was the first time I ever saw him smile. It transformed him from someone menacing to someone you wished you knew. But it took several months before I returned that smile." pg 111

Chapter 7

1.      What are the pros and cons of Peeta and Katniss being coached together?

The pros are that they can help each other because they know their abilities. The cons are that they might know each other’s weakness and they might want to take advantage and kill the other person.
2.      What reasons does Peeta give for thinking Katniss will be better than him in the arena?

He sees what she hunts and how good she is at hunting. Also that his mother said at least we’ll have a winner this year and he knew that she didn’t mean him she meant Katniss.
3.      What are Career Tributes and how are they a threat?
                                                      example of career tribute------>
Career tributes are people who have been trained to win the games for their whole lifes. They are a threat because they could easily kill anyone really fast and they can handle almost every weapon.
4.      What does Katniss do to get the Gamemakers' attention?

She gets frustrated with them paying attention to the pig more than her and she shoots the apple right out of the pig’s mouth and into the wall.

Quotes
"The thought of meeting the other tributes face to face made me queasy. I turn the roll I have just taken from the basket over and over in my hands, but my appetite was gone." pg88
"You know what my mother said to me when she came to say good-bye, as if to cheer me up, she says maybe District twelve will finally have a winner. Then I realized, she didn't mean me, she meant you!" bursts out Peeta."  pg90
"She has no idea. The effects she can have." pg91
"It's not easy to find a topic. Talking of home is painful. Talking of the present unbearable." pg97

Chapter 6
1.      What is an Avox? How does Katniss know the Avox?

An Avox is a person who has committed of a crime and has to have their tongue cut off. Katniss knows that Avox because she saw her running away from something in the woods.
2.      What prevents tributes from jumping off the roof? Why do you think this is in place?

An electric force field surrounds the roof and if they try to jump of it just throws them back. That is probably there because they don’t want anyone to die before they are put in an areno to kill each other.
3.      What reasons would Peeta have for being curious about Gale?

He probably likes Katniss and is making sure they aren’t anything special or a couple. He also may be jealous of Gale.

Quotes
“We’re the first team she’s ever chaperoned that made a splash at the opening ceremonies.” pg73
"I feel my insides contracting with anxiety and guilt at the sight of her, and while I can't pull it up, I know some bad memory is associated with her." pg.77
"The expression of terror that crosses her face only adds to my confusion and unease." pg77
"You do have the sense that we might be under surveillance here." pg 80

Chapter 5

1.      The presentation of the tributes seems to be greatly focused on visual presentation and looks — what does this reveal about the belief systems of the Capitol?

This reveals that the capitol only focuses on the beauty of things if they aren’t beautiful they aren’t good. It also means that the first impression means everything to everyone.
2.      Compare and contrast life in the Capitol to life in District 12.

In district 12 people have to hunt or work hard for their own food. In the capitol they get food with a push of a button. District 12 is the poorest district the capitol is super duper rich. In district 12 you have to struggle and you will have a hard life. In the capitol you have everything you want in the push of a button.
3.      What does Cinna ask Katniss and Peeta to do just before they ride out in their chariot? What is the purpose of this gesture?

Cinna asks Peeta and Katniss to hold hands before they went out into the crowd. Cinna wanted them to look like a pair that isn’t trying to kill each other in the arena like if they are united together.
4.      Why is it so hard for Katniss to trust Peeta's kindness?

It’s very hard for Katniss to trust Peeta’s kindness because his kindness could just be tricks and in the arena he might want to kill her when she least expects it.

Quotes

"Don't be so stupid. Peeta is planning to kill you, I remind myself. He is luring you in to make easy prey. The more likeable he is, the more deadly he is." pg.72
"For the first time, I feel a flicker of hope rising up in Me." pg.70
"So I keep holding on, but I can't help feeling strange about the way Cinna has linked us together. It's not really fair to present us as a team and then lock us into the arena to kill each other."  pg71
"I want the audience to recognize you in the arena, says Cinna dreamily.Katniss the girl who was on fire." pg67

Chapter 4

1.      Do you think Haymitch will be helpful as a mentor? Why or why not?

No I don’t think Haymitch will be a good mentor because all he wants to do is get drunk. Maybe he could mentor them because he did win the games a long time ago. If he wasn’t a drunk he could of probably help them.
2.      What does Katniss mean when she says: “A Kind Peeta Mellark is far more dangerous to me than an unkind one”?

I think Katniss is saying that he is probably being nice on purpose to get what he wants also maybe to back stab her in rhe end.
3.      What happens to convince Haymitch that Peeta and Katniss might be fighters?
What happens is that he gives them the most senseless advice to stay alive. Then peeta gets mad and drops his beer then haymich punches him then Katniss doesn’t want him to do anything more she gets a knife and bearly misses his fingers.
4.      What is the first honest advice that Haymitch gives them?

Haymich tells them not to ever resist on anything they tell them to do.

Quote
“Here some advice. Stay alive." Pg. 56
"A kind Peeta Mellark is far more dangerous to me than an unkind one. Kind people have a way of working their way inside me and rooting there." Pg.49
"Did I actually get a pair of fighters this year" pg 57
"You'll be put in the hands of your stylists. You’re not  going to like what they do to you. But no matter what it is don't resist." Pg58

Gale tells Katniss to get her hands on bows and arrows because that’s her specialty.

1. How does Katniss save her sister from the reaping?

Katniss saves prim from the reaping by volunteering to take her place in the games. That’s how Katniss saves her little sister from being the tribute.

2. Who is the boy tribute selected? How did he save Katniss life when she was 11?

The boy tribute selected for district 12 is Peeta Mellark the baker’s son. He saved Katniss’s life because after her father had died her mom had lost all hope so her mom wouldn’t feed her and her little siter. She went to go look for food but couldn’t find any and he saw herand burned the bread on purpose to give it to her. He got hit really bad his mom for burning the bread.

3. What kind of person do you think Peeta is? What evidence from the book led you to come to this conclusion?

Peeta seems like a nice person. He seems like a nice person because he intentionally burned the bread for Katniss and he took the punishment for his actions. He also is the kind of person that gives hope to Katniss.

4. Why does seeing the dandelion after her father's death give Katniss hope?

Seeing a dandelion after her father’s death give Katniss hope because when she had thought she’d lost it all she gained some when Peeta gave her the bread and she saw the dandelion. Now she thinks that dandelions are a sign of hope.
